"I've been travelling in Europe in May 2009, and my permanent residency card expired while abroad. It was an absolute nightmare to get any sort of direction, or help from the Canadian government.
I spent 2 days just trying to track down which embassy could help, dealing with emergency government numbers that didn't work, and being passed over in a circle from one place to another.
We were stranded in Amsterdam and sent to the Hague by an official in Ottawa, only to discover that the Hague didn't have an Immigration department.
We were simply turned away, no assistance, no help. It was an absolute joke. I've been a permanent resident for 16 years and didn't get citizenship because it seemed like a huge hassle. Well, just wait for the hassle of being stranded in a foreign country and counting on our wonderful government!"
